All electronic equipment generates heat during operation, such as our commonly used mobile phones and computers, so as the led strip lights. This heat must be discharged to the outside of the led strip light, otherwise, the accumulation of LED heat will cause the led light strip failure. How do you stop LED strips from overheating?
1. Avoid LED Voltage Drop
When installing led strip lighting, if you connected multiple led light strips in series, it will cause circuit overload. Running a long-distance low-voltage led strip light will cause a voltage drop, and we know that the power is equal to the voltage times the current. The current increases when the voltage drops due to the loss of components flowing through the led strip and generates a lot of heat.
LED Strip Power | Voltage | Current |
90W | 12V | 7.5A |
90W | 10V | 9A |
90W | 8V | 11.25A |
Excessive heat will affect the service life of the led tape lights. When you are connecting led strip lights in series, do not connect too many light strips.
And when you are choosing a led power supply for your led strip lighting, there is an eternal rule, the 80% rule. The led strip power only uses 80% of the power supply.
2. Add An Aluminum LED Light Strip Diffuser Channel
Another way to stop your led strip light from overheating is to strengthen heat dissipation.
Due to the limited heat dissipation of the led light strip itself, you can choose a led diffuser aluminum channel to install the led strip lights. It is a good heat dissipation tool.
3. Choose High Quality LED Strip Lights
The quality of led light strips on the market varies from good to bad. If the quality of the led strip light is not good enough or has very low quality, it will cause the led light strip to overheat. LED lights normally do not burn out over time like incandescent bulbs. And LED components use less energy and generate less heat.
However, as the led light strip ages, the high-temperature resistance of the led strip will become worse.
4. Provide Enough Cooling Space For LED Strips
LED strip light has its own operating temperature. The led strip lighting will work normally within a certain temperature range (-10 ℃ ~ 50 ℃ ), and this temperature is called the working temperature of the led strip.
If the working temperature and ambient temperature (not enough space to dissipate LED heat) are too high, it will melt the adhesive backing and even cause the led strip to fall off from the installation place.
The excessive LED temperature will also affect the yellowing of the white light led strip. To continue to understand the reasons for the yellowing of the white LED light, please click here.
Therefore, if you don’t want your led strip lights to overheat, please pay attention to the following points.
- 1. The current should not exceed the rated working current, and the led power must be suitable. Keep the rule 80% in your mind.
- 2. Don’t connect too many led strips in series. You can select a constant current led strip light for your long led lighting projects. Or connect some led strip lights in parallel.
- 3. Add a tool to enhance LED heat dissipation, like the led aluminum profile.
- 4. Choose high-quality led strip lights.
- 5. Use led light strips under suitable working temperature and ambient temperature, give led strips enough space to dissipate heat.
